Dr. Alexandra Calle is a food safety expert and microbiologist with over 25 years of experience helping the food industry implement science-based strategies to produce safer food. Her work bridges research, regulation, and industry applications, ensuring that scientific advancements in food microbiology translate into real-world solutions.
With a background in applied food microbiology, pathogen detection, and antimicrobial interventions, Dr. Calle has led research efforts to enhance food safety practices across global supply chains by conducting International Food Safety capacity building projects across Latin America and the Caribbean. She has extensive experience with FDA and USDA food safety regulations, contributing to risk assessment and regulatory compliance for food production facilities. Dr. Calle specializes in developing and validating intervention strategies to control foodborne pathogens in livestock and food processing environments. Her experience with the industry alongside her research makes her capable of communicating science effectively at different levels, from resarchers and government agents to food industry workers.
She holds a Ph.D. in Animal Science with an emphasis in Food Microbiology from Texas Tech University, a Master’s in Food Science from the University of Nebraska, and a Bachelor’s in Biology from Universidad del Valle in Colombia. In addition to her academic role, she collaborates with food industry partners, government agencies, and research institutions to advance food safety initiatives internationally.
